On Nutrients; The All-important Fiber

Nutrition is a vital aspect in the life of every living organism. To sustain life, living things have to constantly supply their body with sustenance, without which the organism’s life will be threatened. Various organisms derive sustenance via several means, and the complexity of getting this done has been seen to increase as you go higher the evolution scale. Simple organisms present at the lower part of the evolution pyramid derive sustenance by directly absorbing it into their system from their environment via simple processes like diffusion, osmosis, etc. Organisms higher up the evolution trend have more complex systems for sourcing nutrients. Humans eat bulk nutrient-rich substances which are largely known as food. Foods contain many kinds of nutrients that perform different functions in your body when ingested, digested, and absorbed.

Based on the effects foods have

Based on the effects foods have on your body and the nutritious molecules it contains, foods are divided into different groups. Proteins are macronutrients, that is, they are needed in a relatively larger amount than others. Their primary function is to repair or replace old tissues, and serve as the bodybuilding block. Carbs are also a type of macronutrient, they are the main energy supplying food that is consumed by most organisms. The last macronutrient on this list is lipids, they serve as an alternative source of energy, and are the major part of the fat layer that insulates our body from extreme conditions. Other foods are considered to be micronutrients, they include vitamins and minerals. These two nutrients are required in low quantity, but they are vital in maintaining the healthy nature of your body plus contributes to the basic functioning of the body.

Although they are required in small

Although they are required in small quantities, they need to be supplied daily, their absence from diets can lead to serious medical conditions. Other substances have been regarded to be nutrients due to their vital contributions to your physical health, these include water and dietary fiber. Water has multiple vital uses by the body, and you can only survive three to four days without taking in this liquid. Dietary fiber or roughage, however, does not necessarily pose any serious threat when it is absent in your diet but that doesn’t mean fiber is useless to your body system. Fiber is solely derived from plant source foods such as grains, nuts, vegetables, fruits, and seeds.

On Nutrients; The All-important Fiber

The body cannot break down roughages into simple forms that can be absorbed into your body, so it usually moves through the whole length of the alimentary canal without being digested. Dietary fibers improve the entire digestive process being done by your body. It slows down digestion making your body extract many more nutrients from the food it will absorb when fibers are absent. Roughages generally improve the health of a person, by making the process of digestion more effective and improving the waste removal process of the body. There are two types of roughages depending on their solubility in water, they include, soluble fibers and insoluble fibers.

Soluble fiber is structured in a way that it can absorb water when this type of fiber gets to the gut, it absorbs the liquid present, forming a gel-like substance that is digestible by the microbial population in your large intestine that assists in the digestion process in humans. Insoluble fiber can’t absorb water making them indigestible, instead, fiber adds bulk to the stool produce, making it easier for the waste to be ejected by your body. Fiber is considered as macronutrients, although unlike other macronutrients, it can’t serve as an energy source for your body, for proper digestion of food it is needed in relatively large quantities.

Apart from waste control, fiber yet has other positive effects fiber contributes to improve or maintain the healthy state of a person. Taking food high in fiber can reduce your risk of suffering from type 2 diabetes. Even if you have diabetes, the nutrient can help in managing the ailment by slowing down the rate at which glucose is absorbed into your bloodstream. It could help combat some heart diseases, since it increases the amount of cholesterol in your body plus reduces the amount of LDL which is directly responsible for most cardiovascular conditions. Dietary fibers are yet connected to the prevention of stroke, improving the health of your skin, and helping in losing weight.
